Therapy Dogs work in a variety of fields requiring specialized training for both the human and the dog. Therapy Dog teams work as volunteers in hospitals, schools, libraries to bring comfort and support. Therapy Dogs are also partnered with clinicians and educators in a variety of medical settings, schools and private practices. These dogs offer companionship, emotional support, participate in therapies to improve speech and coordination, improve social skills, teach empathy for others, encourage social interaction with others, encourage exercise, physical activity and responsibility. The following are the four accepted types of animal assisted programming and our featured presenters.
• Michelle McCarthy- CDBC, CTAC and therapy dog In–training Dillon will be presenting on Animal Assisted Activity (AAA.) An AAA is less goal-directed as specific objectives may not be planned. AAA is provided in a variety of settings, may be group or individual in nature and may be implemented for persons of any age. The animal and handler are specially trained and tested by an organization that meets the minimum standards for AAA. Michelle will also discuss the process of puppy/dog selection, training, testing and placement.

• Beth Albano, OTRL, CBIS and therapy dog Opus will be presenting on Animal Assisted Intervention (AAI.) This is a goal-directed intervention designed to promote improvement in physical, social, emotional and/or cognitive functioning of the person(s) involved and in which a specially trained animal-handler team is an integral part. AAI is directed and/or delivered by a practitioner with specialized expertise and within the scope of practice of his/her profession. There are specific goals for each individual involved and the process is documented and evaluated.

• Jan Shamraj, CTRS will be presenting on facilitating group and individual therapy dog visits
with patients and families in clinical and in-patient settings. The volunteer, their therapy dog and the Recreational Therapist work together to bring happiness, relaxation, peer connections, physical activity, curiosity, distraction from pain, and "a bit of home" to a patient in the hospital. Patients often share how their own pet helps them to cope with their chronic illness, day to day and how animals bring out a caring purpose in life. Program development and facility policies and procedures will also be reviewed.

• Kit Fuller, MSW and therapy dogs Pippa and Leo will be presenting on Animal Assisted Play Therapy (AAPT) Pet Play Therapy (VanFleet 2006) has been defined as ‘the integrated use of animals in the context of play therapy, in which appropriately trained therapists and animals engage with children and families primarily in play interventions aimed at improving the child’s psychosocial health and the animals well-being. Play and Playfulness are essential ingredients of the interactions and the relationship.

• Erika Erlandson, MD and therapy dog Bolt will be presenting on Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) An AAT intervention is formally goal-directed and designed to promote improvement in physical, social, emotional and /or cognitive functioning of the person(s) involved and in which a specially trained animal-handler team is an integral part of the treatment process. AAT may be provided in a variety of settings, may be a group or individual in nature and may be implemented for persons of any age. There are specific goals for each individual involved and the process is documented and evaluated.
