Description

K9 Home Schooling has been preparing humans and their canine companions for Therapy Dog work since 1999.

Our specialized programs prepare teams for Therapy Dog Work in:

Animal Assisted Activities (AAA)
Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI)
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
Animal Assisted Play Therapy (AAPT).

Therapy Dog Prep School is a 4 week class for dogs over 6 months of age who've successfully completed K9 Home Schoolings Level 1 Obedience Class and have Instructor approval.

**Because this is an advanced class, we do not accept transfer students from other programs.  ALL students enrolling in this class MUST have Instructor approval.  If you have not been in a K9 Group Class within the past 6 months you will also need to be screened in one of our group classes prior to enrolling in TD Prep**

This program is unlike traditional obedience classes or CGC classes in that it is geared specifically for the training needs of dogs and humans pursuing Therapy Dog Testing.  We will focus on techniques for effective interaction between visiting teams and patients. Students enrolled in Therapy Dog Prep School are eligible to participate in Socialization Outings in the community. Our specialized workshops and  classes allow teams to practice skills learned in class.

Our training programs are not designed nor required to certify dogs, but rather to give both handler and the dog tools to become effective therapy teams and to be better prepared for tests conducted by various Therapy Dog Organizations.

Our instructor, Michelle McCarthy is a nationally recognized Certified Therapy Animal Consultant and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. She has years of experience working as a Therapy Dog Handler in the community. Michelle developed and launched a Therapy Dog Program at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital called Paws-itive Comfort. She coordinated and launched R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog) Programs at the Ann Arbor and Chelsea District Libraries as well as various Elementary Schools. Michelle works as a Training Consultant and Tester for various Service Dog and Therapy Dog Organizations. She works closely with medical professionals and educators who utilize a Therapy Dog in their work place.  Michelle has trained and placed Therapy Dogs in medical facilities and private practices around the US.

**K9 Home Schooling does not train or certify Service Dogs or Emotional Support Dogs, we can refer you to a reputable Program**
